HELLO NEW HOME!

The new place (all 600 sq ft of it!) is currently being painted this great warm neutral from Benjamin Moore with white trim. The bathroom will be painted something wild when I live with it a while.

...and now for the kinda BIG announcement.

I am having my furniture builder and upholsterer make me a version of this sofa. A traditional take on the George sofa from B&B Italia (credit where credit is due!) I kept most of the proportions and lines, making the seat cushion a little bigger and softer, take away the chrome legs and slipcover the whole thing in dark grey linen with a skirt to the floor and add 100% down to the seat and cushions and at 78" wide, 25" tall and a wapping 38" deep (so comfortable) you've got the SACHUEST SOFA, I have named my version after the beach I grew up next to, the place that holds so many fond memories. That's right folks, you too can have one of these! I guess I am introducing the first piece in my own furniture line, MADE IN THE US of A, Solid hardwood/8 way hand tie construction etc etc blah blah blah. I am also having my seamstress make a few pillows out of some antique japanese striped and hand stitched textiles I picked up in Paris.

...I am making one large version of the bookcase below...much lower and wider for all my books and bins for all of my office stuff and fabric/wallpaper and finish samples.

Without the photo wall in this new place ( as of yet, I haven't completely given up on the idea of doing a new version of it, well see) ANYWAY'S I needed a large anchoring piece of art for above the bookcase. In comes new friend and insanely talented photographer Meghan McInnis. Long story short, I have been a fan of this image of the band HAVE HEART for a long time. Turns out my friend in Seattle was very good friends with the photographer, we met on her trip out here and right now, as we speak the print is en route to my little fingers! A little punk rock never hurt any decorators home/office, right? I am truly grateful to have such a large group of talented individuals surrounding me. More images of the framed piece and the rest of the apartment once I make the move next week.

A DINING ROOM CARE OF THOM FILICIA...AND A LITTLE BOURBON

It all started at a holiday party this past December at a clients home where I met one of my now clients Erin. All I can really remember from that night (lots of bourbon) was how much she said she liked my cologne (Hinoki by Comme des garcons). A few days later I get a text from her asking if "I had room in my busy schedule to fit in another client? " We will forget that ever happened and just move on. Erin has amazing energy always surrounding her and an amazing home filled with a loving family that just needed the touch of someone like myself to cross all of the T's and dot the I's. We began our journey with Erin's love of the fantastic Thom Filicia fabric for Kravet. I suggested we make drapes for her dining room as that was where we were starting...but not without attending to the paint first.

...simple. A complimentary light citron color to compliment the fabric and to add interest we painted the chair rail down decorators white from Benjamin Moore. Did I mention that Erin is a stay at home mom and a power house and insisted on tackling all of the painting we would be doing by herself?!!!? Yeah well she did...needless to say, she's hired.

Classic rod's and swing arms from Iron Art in an antique brass finish were used to complete the look.

BLAMO! drapes. (well, a month later)

Next we will install this great chandelier and matching sconces from Circa lighting that have a subtle Art Nouveau flare to replace her existing one.

The real BAM in the room will come in the form of eight Louis style chairs upholstered in a heavy duty (perfect for her two sons) velvet from Romo in a bright citron to complete the whole look.

...Some framed hand painted papyrus prints, a lamp or two for the buffet and well call it a day, and on to the living room we shall go. Erin is probably taping the room as we speak for painting...right Erin?!

BP///RHOADS PROJECT

...You may remember a little article in the much loved Rue Magazine about me and my petit home last month that was shot by the lovely and talented Sarah and Chris Rhoads of We Are The Rhoads, well I must have really charmed them, cause I am currently re-doing their Seattle home. Starting with the Entry, Living and Dining areas, we are making some serious head way and I happy to share some of it with you...

///If you were a bird.

///A chesterfield in Dark Grey heavy linen custom designed by myself to be a little deeper than normal for loungey nights.

///A pair of BP INTERIORS pillows. Half drab wool and half antique rubberized army laundry bags...I know, I'm kind of twisted, but once the goods are washed and filled with 100% down they become pure luxury.

///A white console for behind the sofa.

///The console will be the new home of these fantastic Paul Evans lamps that I found on a trip to another clients home in San Diego. Rewired and topped with black paper drum shades.

///Under foot is a too step process. To anchor the room we will use this large sisal rug.

///On top to add some texture and pattern we"ll throw one of these bad boys down.

///The coffee table from my collaborative collection with Blackbird is perfect for this space.

///Drapes for both the living room and dining room in white linen with the bottom third being fashioned out of the same antique rubberized laundry bags as the pillows.

BP IN SF///ROB'S PLACE

Rob is one of my absolute bestest friends in the whole world, so when he moved into his new place in the Mission in San Francisco I was more than honored to be asked to decorate it. Rob and I met in Portland almost 5 years ago and we have been close ever since. The main theme of his new place was the colorful album covers of the band Belle & Sebastian. We painted the main living room and hallways a rich golden yellow and accented the neutral furniture and wood tones with pops of saturated corals, navy blue and orange, most notable seen in the framed lithograph from one of my favorite artists, Josef Albers. The over 100 year old rug that I carried on the plane on my first trip to begin the project adds texture and age to a mainly new palette of furniture. In the living room and hallway (to my surprise) Rob was looking for something like my photo wall in my own home...we went a lot cleaner by having rob choose a series of photos he really connected with and framed them individually treating them like little objects and lined the hallway with them. The kitchen was painted a rather deep greenish shade of navy blue and glows like a candle when lit. We shadow boxed albums from the inspirational band to complete the look with bamboo shades throughout the apartment to add texture and a bit of privacy. More to come on this space. I have recently started working on the largest project in my short career. A 7700 sq ft home on Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. I spent the last day and half down there, doing all the nitty gritty of measuring and photographing and ooohing and ahhhing and budgeting and taco eating and moon watching. A massive undertaking to say the least with some very spirited clients. I cannot wait to see how this whole journey unfolds and will of course share it with all of you as we progress.

ALSO: I think I want to retire and become a surf bum...maybe.

Hello All... Just a quick update to let you know that I have been traveling a bit working on some of my clients homes. It looks a little like this ... Seattle>Paris (above)> Seattle> San Diego> Seattle> San Diego> Seattle> San Francisco> Seattle> Palm Springs> Seattle... putting that down on "paper" just exhausted me, but I will not for one second fell less than blessed beyond words. My head is brimming with ideas, new projects and more inspiration for all y'all. Also keep an eye out for BP INTERIORS Bedding collection late spring/early summer as the first of a series of products for the home from yours truly. Stay tuned!

INTRODUCING: BLACKBIRD HOME AT THE FIELD HOUSE

IT ALL STARTED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO...

...Meeting with Nicole Miller, owner of Blackbird to discuss with her my ideas to "fully aestheticize the Blackbird man's lifestyle". We met several times over a few months, I'd bring some ideas and fabric swatches and she'd talk about the moon and the stars and german expressionism and everything she wanted a home collection to embody. These were the infant stages of what would become Blackbird Home at The Field House. Nicole then brought me on to help with the design and opening of the Portland Blackbird location, a project I will never forget and look back on very fondly. We distilled everything that worked for Blackbird so far and took it ever further creating a space that allowed the clothing to speak and just be. An exoskeleton, tent like structure was the main element, a wall treatment of smears from the Portland Mercury with nods to Cy Twombly's paintings. A giant army parachute for a dressing room drape and you've got the space. That experience taught us that we could do anything.

We returned to Ballard recharged and full of creative energy ready for the next evolution of Blackbird. Blackbird Home at The Field House was what grew from this energy. Every sense is taken into consideration in this space. From all of the scents in the Apothecary to the visual stimulation of all of our new home and lifestyle products. Like everything Blackbird offers this new line of furniture, lighting and home accessories is of the highest quality and pushes limits in design while keeping the history of each element in mind. Our sofa with its Victorian and English styling is juxtaposed with darkness in the upholstery, a lush black reverse buffalo hide. The pillow collection is based off of paintings from the artist Kazimir Malevich, done in super soft wool. A print collection taken from my own personal archives of found images from flight testings and war imagery adds great texture to any space.

Stay tuned for a bedding collection, more upholstery, table top, in house design services and an ever expanding collection of fine furniture in hardwood and steel. I invite personally invite you into what has been a big part of the last year of my life. Our blood, sweat and even a few tears are in this new space and we are more than ecstatic to be able to share what has been floating in our heads for a long time.

I met an absolutely lovely woman the other day in one of my favorite showrooms here in Seattle. Her name is Paige. Long story short, we needed to exchange emails so that she could pass along some photos and pricing for a table for a client of mine. When I handed her my card, she gasped and said...wait! "this is you?!" I humbly replied, yes. "I've been following your blog for 3 years and I just love it, I even missed it when you took a break from posting this summer" (at this point I was on the verge of tears, and my cheeks were as red as an apple). This kind of stuff makes all the effort I put into what I do worth it. I am still just a kid, widdling away in my apartment, learning everyday and building this thing called BP. INTERIORS into, well who knows what it will be some day. I am a very lucky person to be able to do what I love for a living and have some of the most gracious and exciting clients and projects. Like-minded, challenging people are few and far between, keep them tight and your brain will never be starved. There are precious few things in the world today that haven't already been photographed, and the view from an aeroplane window is certainly not one of them. But I am always on the look out for photographers who are able to approach cliches or the over familiar in new and interesting ways, and make us reconsider what we think we already know.

PHILLIP KALANTZIS-COPE'S series 'on the plane' does exactly this. His images show us what is both a familiar yet unnatural environment, and somehow by looking at these images, the wonder of air travel becomes more apparent.

My Nona was a fascinating woman: a world class historian, anthropologist and archaeologist, but most importantly a mother/grandmother. A woman of rare modesty and intense honesty, Ana Marie Soldi has influenced some of the most respected scholars in the world today and I am sure has touched the hearts of every single person she has ever met. Kind as one can be, my Nona and I could spend hours talking about art and photography. My Nona could look at me and smile in a way that no one else can. These are photographs of her house, the place where she spent the last 40 years of her life. This is the place where she died, surrounded by her family and everyone else who loved her deeply.

Aside from the ocean tones that are ever present in color stories for me, (mostly colors from the whites of the sea and the crests of darkly lit waves) the addition of dirty pastels and vibrant tones muted by the twilight hour of the evening are very exciting to my eye. Hidden flower beds in dim lighting struck by a rogue stream of golden yellow sun right before it sets and the cool grasses surrounding them are where my head is at. Vitamin D for the eye.

This is the first day of my life. I swear I was born right in the doorway. I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed. They're spreading blankets on the beach.

Yours is the first face that I saw. I think I was blind before I met you. Now I don’t know where I am. I don’t know where I’ve been. But I know where I want to go.

And so I thought I’d let you know. That these things take forever. I especially am slow. But I realize that I need you. And I wondered if I could come home.

Remember the time you drove all night. Just to meet me in the morning. And I thought it was strange you said everything changed. You felt as if you'd just woke up. And you said “this is the first day of my life. I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you. But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you. And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me. With these things there’s no telling. We just have to wait and see.

But I’d rather be working for a paycheck. Than waiting to win the lottery. Besides maybe this time is different. I mean I really think you like me.

PROPS: I dont know how many times I have spoken on the topic of light. It is truly the most inspirational and challenging thing my mind tackles on a day to day basis. I am constantly trying to capture it myself in my own travels and such, sometimes I come close to getting the idea across, but most times I have to rely on the memory, which I have learned can be just as rewarding and makes it somewhat more special as something just for me. When I stumble upon photos like the ones above, I'm humbled. Who knows if this other blogger Brian, (coincidence) who lives in London has the same ideas about light, or maybe he doesn't think twice about it. I guess it doesn't matter, he got me to look, he got me to keep looking and it made me smile. Right now in Seattle, were having some of the most beautiful twilight hours each night, the colors that I have been seeing...well they're just stunning. Moving. Seeing. Building a library in my brain in hopes that I'll see it in something else down the road. THE BLUE HOUR
